General Information

On July 1, 1974, the Illinois Lottery was officially launched. It distributed its first tickets at over 7,000 retailers across the state immediately after. The Lottery has continued to offer new games and, in 2004, the Lottery’s 30th anniversary, launched a $3 million special “Second Chance” promotion. This promotion was the largest in Illinois history for a second chance promotion. There were 20 weekly drawings worth $100,000 and a grand prize of $1 million. The Grand Prize was an “Anniversary Party”, which saw 7 instant games with the anniversary theme launched, offering more than $100 million in prizes.

The Illinois Department of Revenue manages and operates the Lottery. It is currently under the supervision of Superintendent Ralph Batch. Lotto, Little Lotto and the Big Game are some of the Illinois Lottery games. Pick 3, Pick 4, and many other exciting instant games are also available. All proceeds from the Illinois Lottery are returned to Illinois by the Common School Fund, which supports actions and projects in support of K-12 public education.

Lottery History

Mega Millions’ 2004 jackpot reaches $294 million. It was won by Geraldine Williams from Lowell, Massachusetts. This is the largest single-winner payout in Mega Millions/Big Game history. Two players were awarded expense-paid tickets to the 2004 Latin Music Awards in Miami.

Fiscal Year 2004 saw the largest ever Lottery sales of $1.7 billion and Common School Fund transfers totaling $570 million.

In 2004, the Lottery began a partnership with Sony Corporation, and introduced the instant ticket Sony Xtreme. This ticket gives you the opportunity to win Plasma TVs instantly or up to $25,000

2005 was another record year for Illinois Lottery. Its highest-ever sales totalled $1.84 Billion. This allowed it to transfer $614 Million to the Common School Fund. Instant ticket sales reached a record $904 million.

Pick ‘n play, an online game that mixes instant and online games, was launched in 2003. Customers choose one of several play cards that look like instant games, and then take the play cards to the Lottery counter to activate or purchase. The clerk scans the card to produce an online ticket which can be used to play against the playcard.
